Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism Symptoms

By Bjorn Beheydt of Sana-life.net

When the thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone, it is called hypertyroidism. When the thyroid produces insufficient thyroid hormone, it is called hypotyroidism. Hyper means too much, hypo means insufficient, and thyroid is the name of the gland, which is found in the neck below the thyroid cartilage (Adam's apple) and around the same level as the cricoid cartilage. The thyroid controls how the body deals with its energy, proteins, the other hormones in the body.

Hyperthyroidism causes a sped up metabolism.

The symptoms of hyperthyroidism can be:

- fast heart beat

- palpitation (abnormal beating of the heart)

- being extremely nervous

- restlessness

- fatigue

- always moving

- insomnia

- shaking

- extremely sweating and warm hands

- diarrhea

- weightloss, even when eating more

Hypothyroidism causes a slow metabolism.

The symptoms of hypothyroidism can be:

- fatigue

- sleepiness

- fuzzy feeling

- gaining weight

- water retention

- hairloss

- dry and easily breaking hair

- constipation

- feeling cold

- apathy

- sometimes depressive feelings

Other symptoms that sometimes occur:

- slowed down heartbeat

- less appetite

- change in voice

- irregular menstruation

- children: delayed development

Should you experience any, or a combination of these symptoms, and have no way of explaining them (meaning, fatigue is normal if you have only slept an average of 3 hours a night for the last two weeks), it is best to consult your doctor. Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can be easily traced by a simple and relatively painless bloodtest.
